The History Of The Hub

Our journey began in the heart of a small mining village, where an old miners’ welfare building served as the community centre. Over time, the village dwindled in size after the mine closed down, and the centre fell into disrepair.

We rallied together and embarked on a ten-year project to raise funds for a new centre.

When Sherburn Hill primary school sadly closed, we saw an opportunity to transform the site into a community hub that would truly serve our community’s needs. We finally opened our doors in April 2021 and opened Peachey’s Café in early 2022.

Our community hub is not council-run or council-funded.

Instead, we are entirely funded by grants, donations, and the income from events, activities and bookings. We are run by our charity, with a dedicated team of trustees.

Our site also houses a council Family Centre, and we serve both our local community and the wider area.

It’s been a long and challenging journey, but we’re proud of our achievements. We’ve repurposed an old building into something truly valuable for our community.
